Emmalyn Nguyen, 19, was left unable to speak, walk or feed herself after being given anesthesia for breast augmentation surgery in Greenwood Village, Colo. on Aug. 1, 2019, according to multiple reports. “Emmalyn’s parents and siblings are heartbroken,” her family’s attorney David Woodruff told CBS Denver on Sunday. ”This turn of events was sadly unexpected.

“The world has lost a wonderful, sweet, vibrant young lady. She had a lifetime ahead of her which was needlessly cut short.”

The family of the teen had filed a lawsuit against the surgeon, Dr. Geoffrey Kim, and the nurse anesthetist, Rex Meeker, accusing them of gross negligence. They will now continue as a wrongful death lawsuit.

Kim, who admitted he didn’t call 911 for five hours after Nguyen’s cardiac arrest, had his medical license suspended but has since had it reinstated. He has probationary status to practice medicine for the next three years.

“Medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the United States,” Woodruff told Fox News Denver. “Emmalyn’s parents believe it is important to tell Emmalyn’s story, not only to bring her some justice but also to help prevent this from ever happening to another patient.”
